A Day In The Life Of Law Enforcement Officer In NYC

The NYPD is by far the largest police department in the entire US. The department also has one of the highest-paying entry-level positions in any federal department with tons of other benefits. However, most people apply for the Suffolk Police Exam not because of compensation and benefits but the inherent satisfaction of being a police officer in—at least according to New Yorkers—the greatest city in the world.

Typical Routine Of An NYPD Officer 

So what's a typical day like in the NYPD? Well, it depends on your PSA (police service area), but the basic routine is the same. 

You start the day by driving to work in casual clothes. After all the greetings, the first thing you do is put on a uniform. You first put on a vest and then wear the rest of the uniform on top of it. You also put on a 25-pound utility belt with a gun holster, pepper spray holder, handcuff case, flashlight, radio holder, magazines,  two sets of handcuffs, and other essentials (yeah, NYPD officers are real-life Batmans). 

The belt also has a tourniquet, a device that can be tied around a limb to stop bleeding in case of an accident. All this extra weight may take a few weeks to get used to, but the exercise you get is more than worth it.



Where you go from here depends on your PSA, but if you're a Neighborhood Coordinator Officer (NCO), you start the day by driving around the neighborhood. You usually police with the same officers every day. You'll probably also make many acquaintances around the neighborhood, especially if your PSA is small. 

Your exact duties on any given day can be anything from visiting a community center to having graffiti removed from a wall. This is what makes the job so satisfactory; you get to do something new every day with your colleagues.
