What Does an NYS Sanitation Worker Exam Contain?

Aiming to be a part of New York's Strongest? You'll have to wait at least six years if you're lucky. The NYC Sanitation Exam is held once only after every 4-6 years.



Fortunately, it’s scheduled to take place in early 2021, so if you’re aiming to take the test, you should be aware of the high stakes involved. The exam is highly competitive, and with more than 90,000 applicants, only 2000 are hired to become part of the department.

A sanitation worker's expected growth is 13% in 10 years due to the increasing number of New York residents and the amount of waste produced daily.

Eligibility

Firstly, applicants have to be over 17 years of age at the time of application to be eligible for the exam. Only those above the age of 21 are chosen to be Sanitation Workers in New York.

These applicants have to be New York City, Westchester, or Nassau County residents for at least five years after securing the position. Applicants should have a valid New York State commercial driver's license (Class A or B) when applying.

Written Comprehension

The reading comprehension tests your critical thinking and knowledge of the English language via a few passages. After reading the passages, you need to write down what you understood with logical explanations. Answers should be based on the passages only.



Written Expression

This section tests your English language abilities as applicants have to identify grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. They’re also required to complete sentences.

This helps in assessing each applicant's writing abilities, as sanitation workers need to be able to express themselves clearly.

Problem sensitivity

In this section, applicants have to understand and identify problematic situations and assess the different elements and causes.

Information Ordering

This section shows how well you can interpret and follow written instructions.

Deductive Reasoning

This section assesses how well you can apply a particular theory to a given problem. The general rule may be provided, and you need to use logic to solve different dilemmas.

Spatial Orientation

This part tests your sense of direction, which is essential as sanitation workers need to know the shortest or longest route when commuting.

Visualization

Applicants should be able to visualize how something will look after being transformed a certain way.
