Steps to Become a Firefighter in FDNY

Being a firefighter requires a lot of courage and passion. After all, it isn't easy to risk your life every other day. This blog post will highlight some of the steps to become a firefighter in FDNY.

Check Your Eligibility Before Applying

Before you apply, it’s important to make sure that you are meeting all their requirements. You can check the complete list of requirements on FDNY’s website.

Apply for the Exam

If you fulfill the eligibility criteria, then the next step is to apply to appear in the exam. Make sure that you send in all the correct details and not make any mistakes in your application. Often, silly mistakes in your application can significantly affect your chances of getting into FDNY or any other federal service.

Appear for the Written Exam

Once your application has been approved, you’ll be required to appear for a written exam that includes different sections on basic reading, listening, problem-solving, and arithmetic. If you wish, you can also benefit from the free prep sessions offered by FDNY. However, seats are limited, and competition is tough so don't delay applying.

Appear for the Physical Ability Test

Just acing the written exam isn't sufficient to get into FDNY. The next step is to pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) that tests all the candidates for their agility and strength. You can also benefit from FDNY’s free of cost work-out sessions to prepare for CPAT.

Candidate Review

Once you’ve cleared the written test and CPAT, you’ll also have to go through certain medical, psychological, and background checks. You can join the FDNY mentorship program, and your mentor will guide you through everything.

Joining the Fire Academy

If you’re lucky enough to pass through all these steps, you’ll be enrolled at the Fire Academy and required to complete an 18-week classroom and physical fitness program. That’s where your career will begin.

Are you aware that you can find many different jobs in the federal government? In Biden's America, there are many opportunities for eligible and deserving candidates to join civil services. However, all positions require the interested candidates to go through a certain screening process.

At Civil Service Success, we are preparing hundreds of applicants to appear for the civil service exams in different sectors relevant to their interests.
