The Secret World of NYC Sanitation Workers

New York is home to the largest Department of Sanitation in the world. In fact, sanitation workers in NYC are responsible for collecting more than 10,700 tons of trash every day.
New York State is densely populated, with over 19.4 million residents. This means that there is a huge amount of waste being generated by the state every day. So the Department of Sanitation has an extremely busy agenda.
And while you may feel like you know all there is to know about one of the most important agencies in the state, there’s a lot more than what meets the eye.

1- There’s a Street in Manhattan Named after the Department

Just like the NYPD is called “New York’s Finest,” the Department of Sanitation has a moniker as well: “New York’s Strongest.”
Initially, the nickname was adopted for the department’s football team in the 80s. Another purpose was to boost morale and show the department that it was just as vital as the NYPD or the fire department.

2- After Trash is Collected, it is Sent out of State

Up until 2001, the Department of Sanitation would dump trash into Fresh Kills, a landfill. However, they had to find an alternative once the landfill closed down.
Nowadays, the State of New York exports more than 85% of its trash to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, where it is dumped.
According to research, the transport of the trash costs approximately $300 million per annum.

3- A Large Part of the Waste Collected by DSNY is Organic

35% of the waste disposed of by the department is organic waste. This kind of waste is easily composted; the DSNY has proposed a number of ways to dispose of organic material in recent years. This makes it environmentally-friendly.

4- The Department Maintains an Art Gallery in East Harlem

Nelson Molina has been running a small art gallery out of a Sanitation Garage in East Harlem for 30 years, and calls the collection “Treasures in the Trash Museum.” All the items were collected by Molina during his time working in the Sanitation Department.
