How to Pursue a Career in Sanitation

The DSNY is the hottest department in NYC to join right now. Recently, an article by Business Insider went viral that reported some sanitation workers in NYC earning up to $300,000 in 2021 from incentive payments. Following this, a greater number of candidates are expected to appear in the NYC Sanitation Exam this time than ever before.

How can you increase your chances of getting recruited and starting a career? Here's a quick guide.

The Written Exam

Normally, the NYC Sanitation Exam is held every 4 to 6 years. However, probably due to Covid delays, the upcoming NYC Sanitation Exam later in 2022 will be held more than 7 years after the last exam in February 2022. Combine this with the Business Insider report, and you've got yourself some serious competition in the written exam this time.

The window for filing the NYC Sanitation Exam application closes on June 28th. Any number of people can apply for the limited number of positions in the department. Only those who do the best on the written exam will be chosen, while the rest will go home empty-handed.

The Physical Exam

After passing the written exam, you have to compete with other candidates on a new stage. The physical exam consists of two phases. The first phase has three tasks and must be completed in three and a half minutes. The second phase has four tasks and gives you no more than six minutes to complete. Also known as the superman test, the physical exam tests your entire range of physical abilities, including strength, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness.

How to Prepare for The Exam

The written exam requires a minimum 70% score to pass. However, this criteria for the written exam is only good on paper (no pun intended). To have any real chance at recruitment, you have to score competitively better than the other candidates. A score of 70% just won't cut it.

We recommend taking professional preparation classes from the most well-established school for DCAS exam preparation in NYC: Civil Service Success.
