3 Challenges of Becoming a Firefighter

The FDNY Exam is easily one of the toughest civil service exams in NYC. However, that doesn't stop thousands of interested candidates from filing the NYC Firefighter Exam application and doing their best to prepare for the test.

Here are the three challenges you'll face becoming a firefighter in NYC.

1. The Written Exam

After you file the Expression of Interest form for the FDNY, you become eligible to attempt the next written exam.  The written exam is the first phase of the recruitment process, and you only move forward if you do well on the written exam.

The FDNY assures you that you don't need any technical knowledge of firefighting to attempt the exam. Instead, the exam consists of problems that test your natural ability to observe, recall, and analyze information.

2. The Physical Exam

If you pass the written exam, you're called for an interview and officially become an eligible candidate. However, the challenges don't end here.

The FDNY's Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) is a rigorous exam that composes the next phase of recruitment. This exam evaluates your aerobic fitness, cardiovascular performance, strength, endurance, and agility with a series of tasks you must complete in a limited time. However, passing these tests is not enough.

3. Medical Assessment

The amount spent on recruiting and training firefighters is an investment. The fire department ensures you're a healthy individual who can do the job for a long time. While the physical exam tests your fitness, the day-long medical assessment evaluates your long-term health.

The assessment consists of various medical tests that look for degenerative factors such as insulin resistance and progression of heart disease.  The medical exam is also followed by a psychological exam, a drug test, and a background check. If you do good at everything, you're sent to the fire academy to begin your training.
