Here are a few tips to help schools handle their recycling more efficiently:

Recycling for Schools – The Basics

· All recyclable items should be set out on the sidewalk outside the school, next to the curb.

· No items should be placed in the street or kept on the sidewalk in a way that interferes with pedestrian traffic.

· Clean paper and cardboard pieces should be kept together in one pile, and bags containing plastic, glass, cartons, and metal should be kept in another.

· Both recycling and garbage should be set out in clear plastic bags, with a capacity of 13 to 55 gallons.

Bins, Bags and Decals

· Every school must purchase recycling bins for the efficient collection of recyclables from its premises.

· However, the collection isn’t limited to bins only. Just about every kind of receptacle is acceptable for this purpose, as long as it’s clearly labeled.

· The New York City Sanitation Department (DSNY) provides free stickers and decals to help with labeling.

· Labels for recyclables are color-coded according tothe material: green is for paper and cardboard, whereas blue is for glass, plastic, cartons, and metal.

Following the Schedule

· Schools in New York city enjoy frequent recycling collections. The daily collection schedule is as follows:

· Clean paper and cardboard are collected on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 2 PM and 4 PM.

· Glass, plastic, metal, and cartons are collected on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2 PM and 4 PM.

· Schools that aren’t on a daily collection schedule get their recyclables picked up with the rest of the neighborhood.

Setting Up A Recycling Area

· Designated recycling areas should be set up wherever recycling and trash arediscarded in a school, such as classrooms, offices, lobby, auditorium, library and gym.

· Bins for glass, plastic, metal, and cartons should be lined with clear (not colored) bags.

· Recycling and trash should always be kept separate.

· Containers should be emptied of food and beverages before recycling.
