How to Train Your Staff in Fire Safety?

According to OSHA, commercial buildings must train their staff in fire safety to become fire wardens. Fire wardens must have a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of actions they must carry out when a fire breaks out, be aware of different fires, know what extinguisher is best for which fire, and efficiently carry out the evacuation process.

Here’s everything a fire warden should know:

Fire Triangle

Fire requires three elements to ignite. They are fuel, heat, and oxygen. You can extinguish the fire by taking any of these three elements out. For example, if you cover the fire with a blanket, it will obstruct the oxygen and put it out.

Finding Out About the Fire

When you discover a fire on the building's premises, you must raise the alarm so that everyone in the building knows that there's a fire on the premises. It'll be a warden's job to ensure that everyone gathers at the designated assembly point.

Kinds of Fires

As a fire warden, you must know about the five fundamental fire types. These include:

· Class A – fires that consist of solid materials like paper, wood, rubber, cloth, or plastic.

· Class B – fires that consist of combustible or flammable liquids like petrol, paint, or oil.

· Class C – fires that consist of flammable gases like butane, propane, or methane.

· Class D – fires that consist of flammable metals like aluminum, potassium, or titanium.

· Class F – fires that consist of fats and cooking oils.

Extinguishing Agents

· Water - Ideal for fabric, wood, and paper.

· Foam - Ideal for wood, paper, and flammable liquids.

· Powder - Ideal for electrical hazards, flammable liquids, gas, chemicals, and oil.

· CO2 - Ideal for electricals and flammable liquids.

· Wet chemical - Ideal for cooking oils and fat.

Identifying Fire Extinguisher Based on Fire Type

· Water - Suitable for shops, offices, warehouses in class A fires.

· Foam - Suitable for material or electrical fires in class A or B.

· CO2 - Suitable for electrical appliances and flammable liquids in Class B fires.

· Wet Chemical - Suitable for kitchen fires where fats and oils are involved.

How to Work a Fire Extinguisher?

· Take out the pin.

· Point the nozzle at the firebase.

· Slowly squeeze the extinguisher's lever.

· Stay at a distance and sway the extinguisher from one side to the other. Move closer as you see the flames subside.

Persons with Disabilities

People with disabilities should be given a unique evacuation plan where they face mobility differences or not. A fire warden must pay attention to people who require extra assistance while evacuating and ensure that they get extra time and space to do that.
