The Role Of the Police During A Pandemic

Law enforcement must uphold public safety and compliance with the law. With the growing concern of the global pandemic, new rules have been introduced into cities across the country. Wearing masks, social distancing, and respecting personal space are part of the new norm in a bid to safeguard public health.

From airplane travel to crowded gatherings, everything now has a new rule to promote social distancing. However, a lot of resistance has been shown by the general public toward this change.

During times of distress, the public looks for an authoritative body to guide everyone away from the chaos. Here’s how the police force can use their role to enforce rules and keep everyone safe.

Crisis Mitigation

The fight between anti-maskers and the general public can escalate quickly. Private establishments have set up rules throughout the nation to ensure that no one enters their space without covering their face. Masks have proven to help reduce the spread of viruses, but many Americans believe it infringes on their rights.

As a law enforcement agent, you must hear both sides of the story and find a way to avoid conflict. It's essential to make both sides feel heard before you objectively explain things to settle the matter. At the end of the day, a private establishment has the right to set its own rules and regulations. As a police officer, you have the authoritative power to reiterate these rules to any offenders, so they understand the consequences of not following them.

Avoid Arrest

Recently, Congress has included $850 million in the Cares Act, a program dedicated to assisting law enforcement in responding during the COVID-19 crisis.

The Act gives the police force way to reduce the risk of spreading the virus with appropriate modifications to their regular practices. One of the suggested changes is to practice the oath of "First, do not harm."

Public arrests should now be seen as a last resort instead of a quicker solution. With the amount of COVID-19 cases found in jails, law enforcement has been advised to reduce arrests until absolutely necessary. Not only does this endanger the offender, but also the officer who has to break the 6-feet social distancing rule to make the arrest.

Prepare to Join The Force

Being part of the country's law enforcement can be an enriching experience. However, police officers go through rigorous testing before they’re eligible to take on a public safety responsibility.
