How Suffolk County Police Is Responding to The Coronavirus


Long Island’s law enforcement officers and first responders are always aware of and prepared for the potential injuries, fatal and otherwise. However, the global coronavirus pandemic has created an unprecedented situation that has killed tens of thousands of people across the country. The state of New York alone has 316, 415 confirmed cases, 34,855 of which are in Suffolk County. First responders and law enforcement officials are battling at the front lines of the outbreak.

Suffolk County Police Response

All across Long Island, police officers, EMTs, firefighters, and correction officers are routinely answering 911 calls, responding to other emergencies, and transporting prisoners even as lockdown and stay-at-home directives have emptied several public spaces.
Suffolk Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart has said that 911 operators, who don’t typically come in contact with the public during their shifts, have been issued personal protective equipment and masks.
Police officers and first responders face a greater risk of contracting the contagion because they have to deal with the public. Despite the efforts of Suffolk and Nassau agencies, dozens of Long Island firefighters, police officers, police medics, and correction officers have tested positive for the virus.

Residents are Protesting to Lift Lockdown Measures

In response to a coronavirus lockdown protest that Long Islanders held on May 1st, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo said, “I’ve said to law enforcement all across the state, enforce the mask executive order. I said State Police will help you enforce it if you can’t enforce it.”

Suffolk Police Chief Stuart Cameron said that several of the people protesting were families. The police chief said that this was the county’s first such protest and the police ensured they learned from the experience. They are now planning strategies to address such future gatherings.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said that the county might be on hand to provide people with masks and that the focus is on educating residents on precautionary measures such as social distancing. “The police will be out enforcing those measures,” he added.
