Coronavirus Outbreak Delays NYS Court Officer Exams

The global coronavirus pandemic has caused governments, corporations, and citizens to halt business as usual. With nearly three million infections in at least 185 countries and territories, strict lockdown, remote work, self-isolation, and social distancing are the only effective measures that can be taken to prevent further spread of the virus.

Those who were planning on appearing for an exam for Court Officer Trainees in April 2020 will also have to wait a little bit longer. The self-scheduled NYS Court Officer exam was set to run from April 15 to June 10. However, as the state remains in lockdown, the exam has been postponed. Here’s what you need to know.

One Month Postponement

The computer-based, multiple-choice exam that is administered by PSI Online is now scheduled to be held in May 13 to July 31. A spokesperson for the United Court System said that applicants are being updated with new information through cellphone messaging. The website and examination announcement have also been updated with the changes in date. This was his statement,
“In order to help ensure the health and safety of our applicants and testing staff, as well as to permit additional flexibility as events unfold, we have postponed the exam for one month and extended the overall testing period by about two weeks.”

According to the president of the New York State Court Officers Association, Dennis Quirk, there were nearly 90,000 applicants for the test. He claimed that it was unwise to expose people to the virus when it can be avoided.

All applicants will receive a link between April 20 and May 1 via email, to reschedule a time when they’d like to take the three-hour and 15-minute test, the UCS spokesman stated. He further said that the scheduling would be first-come, first-served.
During the exam-administration period, employees of the UCS will be required to select from the dates and times available on Saturdays and Sundays. The applicable collective-bargaining agreement rules of the Chief Judge allow court employees who habitually work weekend’s excused leave during workhours.
Court Officers constitute are among the largest groups to constitute the nationwide law-enforcement officers. NYS Court Officers work within the 1500-plus courtrooms and building facilities in the state. The Court Officer-Trainee position is a two-year traineeship.
